The Farmhouse
The Farmhouse Mission, Inc. began in the spring of 2002, under the
direction of Brad Pickens, as a place for Christian discipleship and
spiritual renewal and as a mission to its community in Orange County,
Indiana. The Farmhouse is located on Brad's family farm in
southern Indiana, near the towns of Orleans and Paoli. The land on
which The Farmhouse is situated has been in the Pickens family for seven
generations and the organization is named after Brad's home, a log cabin
built by his grandfather and great-grandfather during the Great
Depression, which was always referred to as the farm house.
From a handful of informal spiritual retreats in 2002 the organization
has developed a comprehensive program of spiritual development for
retreats, a discipleship group that meets twice monthly, and is heavily
involved in community ministry initiatives that focus on the rural poor
in southern Indiana.
Brad Pickens holds the degree of Ph.D.
from the University of Glasgow and has studied extensively in Christian
history and theology, with a focus on theology and culture, American
religion, and Christian spirituality. Brad also holds a M.A. degree in
urban studies and he has concentrated on issues of urban and rural
poverty.
